From competing for a world speed record as a Hampshire student to working with Ferrari, Porsche, and Nike, Wiener has built a career fueled by creativity, risk taking, and bold ideas. His new memoir, Accidental Madness, captures the highs and lows of that journey, providing an inside look at the unpredictable world of entrepreneurship.

For the past nine years, Park City-based engineer David Wiener, the founder and chief executive officer of David Wiener Ventures, DWV Entertainment and Respect the Music Foundation, has focused on fine-art. The entrepreneur, who has worked for the likes of Porsche and Ferrari as a mechanic and marketer, creates what he calls “modern abstracts,” which are collages of automotive-detail closeups that include engine parts, decals, to name a few.

As a serial entrepreneur who has designed and created a broad spectrum of products, I’ve had my share of projects that figuratively fried my brain and kicked another part of my anatomy. Planning any major product – and subsequent launch – is like a cosmic to do list that requires you to think through every tiny detail, plan three steps ahead for contingency, and even then…

"Good enough…Isn’t!” That’s my motto that I have had to use far too often in business, and life. I’ve spent a career trying to innovate and create amazing products, fashion, vehicles, technology, brands, etc., and far too often, I have run into the growing culture of Good Enough. People seem to say it more and more: It’s good enough. What is this about and why are people so willing to settle?

When 78.6 million hits occur after you type Fidget Spinner into a search, something tells you there’s more to these toys than meets the eye. Toys or gizmos designed to satisfy our need to fiddle? Whatever, the market is responding with myriad devices from plastic to gold. And it’s not just for kids; adults are buying into this craze.

A couple of months ago I was asked to moderate a panel at the Thin Air Conference in Park City, Utah. The panel discussed Corporate Culture – the good, the bad, and the sensible, in a start-up, and in a grown business. Having applied my own ideas and experience at building company culture for a variety of companies, I was excited to participate. Plus, having experienced the cultures of client companies, I thought I could make a contribution.

In 1967, when Tatsuo Yoshida’s anime Mach GoGoGo (better known to us as Speed Racer) hit television, kids went wild. Especially this kid, as the sound of roaring engines filled the room and that infamous jingle began, “Here he comes, here comes Speed Racer. He’s a demon on wheels.” It was the perfect show, at the perfect time, as I was already a race car fanatic at the age of 9; the adrenaline rush of racing having subconsciously wormed its way into my psyche. This grip held me as I realized my racing dream years later when I too would begin racing; a demon on wheels.
